Help viewing Chinese characters

This site uses two types of Chinese character encoding and is divided into two mirror sections: /b5/ & /gb/

  • Big 5 (b5) for complex (traditional) characters, used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and throughout the world.
  • GB for simplified characters, used in the People's Republic of China.

Once you are in one of the two sections, you will need to choose the appropriate character/font encoding within your browser. As long as you stay in that section, you will not need to change the encoding. If you switch to the other section, you will need to again choose the correct encoding for that section.

    Internet Explorer:
Go to the 'View' menu, and select 'Encoding' (fonts) - choose the encoding you want to use (Big 5 or GB). If you have the fonts installed, you will then be able to view characters in your browser. If not, Explorer will attempt to download them automatically from the Microsoft site. This should take 10 minutes or less on a modem connection. You may also be able to install the fonts from an IE CD Rom.

    Netscape Navigator:
CyberbitCJK is a popular font that can be used with Netscape to view Chinese. It and other Chinese language resources can be found at:

    http://help.netscape.com/kb/consumer/19981206-1.html

    ftp://ftp.bitstream.com/cyberbit/cyberbit.exe
    ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/communicator/extras/fonts/windows/

Once you have downloaded this font or another appropriate one, install it on your system, then within Netscape, choose 'Edit' > 'Preferences' > 'Fonts' and for both traditional and simplified Chinese choose CyberbitCJK.

Mac Netscape users who have the Chinese language kit installed (included in system 9+) can instead choose Apple LiSung or Taipei for traditional encoding or Beijing for simplified encoding.

For optimal viewing of the Chinese characters as well as the JavaScript used throughout this site, it is recommended that you use the most current browser possible (minimum requirements are Netscape 3+ or Explorer 4+).

For excellent guidelines on how to read Chinese on the Internet, consult any of the following sites:

Please note that characters may not properly appear in the 'ALT' tag pop-ups, title bar or status bar if you are not using a Chinese language operating system or a Chinese system program such as Twin Bridge.
